Owning your own airplane: Insurance costs? 12 years 5 months ago #1336

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a trainer aircraft with two other partners/co-owners. As part of the acquisition process, I'm trying to get a very rough \"ballpark\" figure of what yearly insurance will cost. I haven't chosen a specific airplane yet (or even settled on two people to share the cost with) but here are the approximate details:

*************************************
Aircraft: Used Diamond Katana DA20 A1 or C1, $50,000 to $100,000 Canadian, 1000 to 2000 TTAF

Stored at: Brampton Flying Club, Ontario, hangered.

Owner #1: Me, 31 year old male, student-pilot, 20 hours of flight time. I'll be using the aircraft to complete my PPL.

Owner #2: 40 year old male, student-pilot, 50 hours of flight time.

Owner #3: 45 year old male, low-time pilot, 150 hours of flight time.

Assume $1 million in liability insurance.

Assume all owners have a (relatively) clean driving record, good health, good financial record, etc., etc.
*************************************

Questions:

1) Ball park, how much will yearly insurance cost? $1k, $3k? $6k, $10k, $15k, $20k ?

2) What are the ramifications of having student-pilot owners? Would insurance be cheaper if the co-owners were low time pilots (example: 250 hours)?

3) Would there be any insurance cost saving to change to a Cessna 150/152 or 172?

Hi, your best bet would be to call Marsh and ask them direct. It'll probally be cheapest if you are all copa members and get a silver plan through them. I'd \"plan\" for insurance being around $2700. That is a rough guess. I think you an have up to five pilots on that silver plan. Also, if one or more pilots do not meet their specific insurance qualification you will just pay a higher premium on a per pilot bases. Usually they just like to see 10hours on type or something simple for most GA aircraft.

Hi Vito;

Please let us know what your outcome is, as I'm curious.

In my post-student days, I'll probably be looking at getting a 1/3 or 1/4 share in a 152/172 simply to make flying more affordable.

I too have been very curious about what the insurance will be, cost wise. It's no secret that low hours (or student) pilots will incur much greater costs, but you seem to have a reasonable mix of pilots in your post.

It would be nice for anyone in our situation to get a multi-thousand hour pilot to offset/lower the insurance costs for the others whom may have a fraction of the hours, but it's probably going to be tough to find someone with that many hours that is going to be the least bit interested in a trainer-style aircraft.

I think the ideal situation for me would be a 1/3 share on a 172, with me as a fresly licenced pilot, and two others with thousands of hours each.

I own a 72 cessna 150. I bought it 2.5 years ago after I got my private license. At that time I had only 70 hours. The insurance cost me $850.00/year with PSA insurance.

Now with a commercial license, I have just around 400.00 hrs and the insurance costs me $900.00/year for the same aircraft. I was told the increase was just an adjusted increase that all owners were getting.

I have $1 million liability, everything clean as a whistle. (knock on wood)

A friend of mine is paying $850.00 or so as a student pilot on a 1969 150. He has 50-60 hours.

I hope this helps.

Paul

Hello Mark,
I provided details for Pilot #2 and Pilot #3 purely as examples... I haven't yet found anyone who is willing (or financially ready) to own 1/3 of a Katana or a C-172.

When I was attending ground school at Buttonville, one of the instructors mentioned that the school was selling a C-150 for somewhere in the $15k range. Initially, a bunch of students were interested in splitting the cost three ways. But after talking to them I got the impression that they didn't fully appreciate the total cost of ownership: gas, insurance, hangering, inspections, repairs, upgrades, not to mention depreciation and overhaul allowance.

Also, I'm not sure if he knew what he was talking about, but the instructor said that the school was selling their C-150s because they were becoming more difficult to source parts for and service... hence my interest in a Katana. Plus, it isn't \"right\" for me to be flying in an airplane thats older than I am.

I will be financially ready to purchase an aircraft around December or January. If you're seriously looking to purchase a share in a C-172 or a Katana, let me know. For me, the aircraft would have to be hangered at either Buttonville or Brampton.

Few people do realize the actual cost of ownership.

I've educated myself so that what may \"Seem\" like a good deal in an aircraft doesn't end up being the worst financial decision in my life. Sadly, alot of other people have fallen into the \"Cheap aircraft\" trap.

Regarding parts, I don't know - I find that personally hard to beleive, but I'm not the person fixing planes, either. With the C150/152 being such venerable planes that have been (And will likely be) around for many years, I would think that there are more then sufficient aftermarket parts available.

I know Cessna themselves still have lots of parts available for the 150/152 series.

Captainkip: Wow! I'm surprised the insurance is that inexpensive for a student with low hours. I pay more then that a year for my car.. :)

Was that with hull insurance, or just liability?

Post edited by: oshawapilot, at: 19:18z - 2005/09/15

The insurance I quoted was full coverage - in motion or not, with liability.

I am not sure of all of the particulars but I can get them if you want when i am actually looking at the insurance. I do remember that I am allowed to fly it to Australia and South America....silly thing to remember hey? hehe. Oh ya and if there is a riot, my poor plane is not covered if it gets damaged :(

Owning the plane for me when I was getting my commercial license was the best deal for me. I believe other than the actual cost of the plane it saved me $4000.00 on getting the license. Fuel was cheap up until lately as I use a car gas mix, and the annuals cost under $400.00. Other than the fuel and maintenance I will get all the money back when I sell the plane (which I will have to do if I get a flying job) as it will only appreciate. I look at owning the plane like owning a newer vehicle and its better as the vehicle will only depreciate. Besides I can live with driving my old truck forever... and hey I dont need a house....I mean you can sleep in your plane but you cant fly your house...LOL.

I have nothing against a partnership. They can be tricky though, you have to make sure that you have a good contract so that everyone is treated fairly and thier needs are met. The student pilot I mentioned earlier in this thread and I have talked about a partnership on a 172 or me selling him half my plane. For me i is just better to own my own plane right now. I can see the benifit if I want something bigger though in the future. Now though i am happy with what i have. It is cheap to fly and it gets me up flying which is the most important thing. It actaully is cheaper than driving my truck when i want to see my parents or travel(depending on which way the wind is going). Besides I spend all my extra cash on renting a buddies float plane to build float hours....which reminds me its time for a fall fishing trip....there goes another $400.00..

Oh well \"Never feel sorry for a man that owns a plane\" - Anthony Hopkins, The Edge.
