Private pilot Flying in Haiti 6 Months, 4 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I was just asked this morning if I could fly a 172 in Haiti, I would be flying my self and a few friend into a place to build a mission School. My question is, is my License valid in Haiti and second do I need a commercial license as I am not flying for hire?

That's quite a mission for a 172. A private license is all thats required, just like flying on vacation but don't forget Customs in both the US and Haiti and/or Dominican Republic. Please plan well before turning a prop. It may also help if you contact someone (also of relief work) down there for info too.There has been lots of info on the American Owner & Pilots (AOPA) site about this - here, if they work for you, they are;

http://www.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2010/100119pilothaiti.html

http://www.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2010/100119dr.html

Hats off to Jeppessen, they were extremely quick and courteous to get me the charts, plates and stuff for the trip. Ditto for Fltplan on info

http://www.jeppesen.com/company/newsroom/articles.jsp?newsURL=news/newsroom/2010/Jeppesen_Haiti_Relief_News_Release.jsp

http://wh94.fltplan.com/forums/threads.cfm?forumid=42B59DB7-3048-8F1F-66A542DA23287319

It may also be an idea to check out other organizations working in Haiti, here's one - http://www.globalvolunteernetwork.org/Another would be http://www.mafc.org/.

Good luck and be safe.

The US AOPA forums are far more informative than our COPA.

If you can assist him, here's the thread -

Thanks,

Will do -

the best info by far is Fltplan.com - they have a 'haiti' bulletin board with good info - and regularly updated

Great info the Fltplan.com very helpful. There is a meeting this Thursday to make plans and i should have a better idea what i am dealing with. This has been very helpful for me as i arm myself with all the info i can get my hands on. looks like the biggest problem will be fuel.

Glad its helped.

I figured fuel would be the main issue. Please post pics and a little write up here of your trip.

Be safe.

All the Best,
BP
