Today In History - March 12, 1908

The first flight of the first airplane built by the U.S. Aerial Experiment Association.

The flight took place when Casey Baldwin flew the Red Wing (named after the red silk on the wings)(Aerodrome No.1).  The craft was the be flown from frozen lake Keuka, with runners for landing gear. It took off from the lake, flew 318 feet on its first flight and was slightly damaged in landing.

Its second flight, after repairs, covered only 120 feet and crashed because of unfavorable winds. The Red Wing was completely destroyed.

CANADIAN HELICOPTERS INCOME FUND AWARDED ADDITIONAL WORKIN AFGHANISTAN

MONTREAL – Canadian Helicopters Income Fund (TSX: CHL.UN) (the “Fund”), the largest helicopter transportation services company operating in Canada, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded additional work in Afghanistan by the the United States Transportation Command (“USTRANSCOM”). This amendment to the support contract previously announced on December 22, 2008, entails the movement of supplies and passengers to military forward operating locations, and involves the provision of two fully crewed and supported Sikorsky S61 heavy category helicopters. One of the aircraft will be provided from the existing fleet of Canadian Helicopters, and one will be leased.

Red Bull Air Race 2010 World Championship opens in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI - The 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Championship opens in Abu Dhabi on 26/27 March, returning to the United Arab Emirates capital for the sixth consecutive year. The world’s top 15 pilots will start their six-month long battle for championship points in the first of eight races on a total of five continents.

CALGARY POLICE LITTLE TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

Reports dating back to 2006 filed with Transport Canada have shown that a Calgary Police Helicopter has flown too close to other aircraft on at least 11 occasions.

The reports state that on all of these occasions the police helicopter was found to be flying less than one nautical mile from other aircraft.

Air Transat resumes regular flights to Port-au-Prince

Air Transat will resume its weekly service between Montreal and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, tomorrow, March 10, following a two-month suspension of flights in the wake of the earthquake that devastated the country. "The January 12 earthquake sparked the largest humanitarian operation ever mounted by our organization. Thanks to the generosity of our employees, our customers and our partners who made it possible" said Air Transat President and Chief Executive Officer Allen B. Graham. "We are grateful to everyone who contributed directly or indirectly."
