Today In History - March 12, 1908

The first flight of the first airplane built by the U.S. Aerial Experiment Association.

The flight took place when Casey Baldwin flew the Red Wing (named after the red silk on the wings)(Aerodrome No.1).  The craft was the be flown from frozen lake Keuka, with runners for landing gear. It took off from the lake, flew 318 feet on its first flight and was slightly damaged in landing.

Its second flight, after repairs, covered only 120 feet and crashed because of unfavorable winds. The Red Wing was completely destroyed.

Cormorant Participates in Response to Mayday

19 WING COMOX – A Cormorant helicopter from 442 Squadron, at 19 Wing, participated in the response to a mayday made by a fishing vessel today near Port Hardy. The Cormorant was launched by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria at about 9:30 a.m. to support the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter (CCGC) Cape Sutil and CCGC Sooke Post.

Canadian Air & Space Museum Seeks Support to Acquire Rare Sikorsky S-58T Helicopter

The Canadian Air & Space Museum of Toronto, Ontario Canada has launched a fundraising campaign to acquire a rare Sikorsky S-58T helicopter that had a remarkable 48-year flying career in Canada and the United States. The Museum's immediate goal is to raise $35,000 U.S. to complete the purchase of the S-58T helicopter and all associated spare parts for static display, as well as arrange the helicopter's transportation by truck from the U.S to Toronto. Canada Aviation Museum, Air Inuit and Kativik School Board Partner for Career Day

Ottawa - Twelve students, hungry minds looking to enter the world of aviation, will travel over 1,600 kilometres from six disparate Nunavik communities to attend the first Canada Aviation Museum Career day on February 23, 2010. These students, six boys and six girls, were chosen from among the best and brightest. They represent the future of the North as they will one day enter the world of aviation.

NAV CANADA reports January traffic figures

OTTAWA - NAV CANADA today announced its traffic figures for the month of January 2010 as measured in weighted charging units for en-route, terminal and oceanic air navigation services, in comparison to the last fiscal year. The traffic in January 2010 decreased by an average of 1.9 per cent compared to the same month in 2009.

WestJet announces service to the City of Roses

CALGARY - WestJet today announced it will begin seasonal service to and from Windsor, Ontario, effective May 31, 2010. WestJet will fly between Windsor and Calgary once a day from May 31 to October 30, 2010. The outbound flight will leave Calgary at 10 a.m. MT and arrive in Windsor at 3:23 p.m. ET. The return flight leaves Windsor at 4:15 p.m. ET and arrives in Calgary at 6:14 p.m. MT, offering easy connections to many western Canadian cities including Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton, Abbotsford, Vancouver and Victoria.

Clock Ticking for Companies Operating Offshore Newfoundland

The clock is ticking on oil companies operating offshore Newfoundland and Labrador to tell the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board their plans for search and rescue services. Inquiry Commissioner Robert Wells released early recommendations last week, seeking a dedicated, full-time search and rescue helicopter based in St. John's with a quicker response time than the current one hour wheels-up. The board has requested the operators reply by today. The industry has also been asked to quit flying at night, except in emergency situations, something the regulator has already ordered the operators to comply with. The first phase of the Inquiry wrapped up yesterday. Commissioner Wells says the search and rescue response time was one of the issues he felt needed immediate attention. Wells says he was particularly struck by the fact that response times in other offshore jurisdictions is as low as 15 minutes. Wells says he will now consult with the lawyers to help concentrate on some of the major issues. He will begin those sessions on Tuesday and hopes to have the issues finalized by the end of March.
