CALGARY - The first annual Kenn Borek Memorial Scholarship
will be awarded at this year's Northern Air Transport Association annual
general meeting and conference in Whitehorse, Yukon. Christien Vipond,
daughter of the late Kenn Borek and director and officer of Kenn Borek Air,
will be presenting the award to the recipient at the conference banquet on
Tuesday, April 4, 2006.
The Kenn Borek Memorial Scholarship was established to assist a Western
Canadian or Northern Canadian student pursuing a post secondary career in
aviation. The scholarship is to be used by the successful applicant towards
tuition for their aviation education. Mrs. Rosella Borek stated, "With the
establishment of the Kenn Borek Memorial Scholarship, we are pleased to
support and recognize young people pursuing careers in aviation and to honour
the legacy of my late husband. We are proud to be able to contribute to the
aviation community in Canada in this way."
Kenn Borek (born and raised on a farm near Stettler, Alberta) founded
Kenn Borek Air in 1970 with one twin otter. Since that time Kenn Borek has
become a recognized pioneer and legend in the aviation industry, particularly
in Arctic and Antarctic operations. Today, the company, with head office in
Dawson Creek, British Columbia and chief operational office in Calgary,
Alberta, operates over 50 aircraft worldwide on all seven continents. Kenn
Borek Air has been recognized for its diversified operations and its
spectacular rescue missions on the Antarctic continent, being the first
operator to land an aircraft at the South Pole during the Antarctic winter.
Mr. Borek and his daughter, Carleen, were killed in a tragic automobile
accident in March of 2002. He was not only a successful businessman; he was
also a leader in the community. In 2002, Mr. Borek received the Queen's Golden
Jubilee medal recognizing the significant contribution he had made to his
community.
