Yesterday, Skyservice Airlines flight No. 828
destined for Toronto's Pearson Airport diverted to Punta Cana following an
attempt by a disruptive passenger to tamper with an aircraft cabin door.
The passenger was subdued by operating cabin crew and passengers along
with the assistance of a second flight crew who were returning home. The
passenger was restrained for the approximately 30-minute duration of the
flight to Punta Cana.
The individual is a male 33 year-old Canadian citizen who boarded in
Barbados to return to his home in the Greater Toronto area. He is currently in
the custody of the local authorities in the Dominican Republic. Skyservice is
working with the Canadian consular and Dominican authorities as well as the
individual's family to repatriate him to Canada as expeditiously as possible.
The remaining 201 passengers along with the operating crew will be
returning to Toronto tonight.
Skyservice spokesperson Sabah Mirza said "We are very proud of how all
Skyservice crew members reacted to restrain the passenger, maintain the
security of the aircraft and minimize disruption to other passengers. We also
appreciate the assistance of the passengers on board. The decision to divert
to Punta Cana was made decisively and quickly by the Captain. We are grateful
to Dominican authorities who have been cooperative and provided assistance
with the passengers from Flight 828 as well as ongoing assistance with regard
to the disruptive individual."
