Late last night Sep 2nd a Cormorant helicopter from 442 Squadron was dispatched to the Port Renfrew area to look for two brothers, aged 21 and 14 who had not returned home after a day hike.
The young men had become separated from their other two brothers when they had to double back on the trail to avoid a bear. As night time was nearing and they had not returned, their absence was reported to the RCMP and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was asked to assist. The Cormorant, using night vision goggles and their searchlight, conducted a shoreline crawl and after 20 minutes of searching on their second pass, saw the young men standing on the rocky shore. Sgt Dan Pasieka, the SAR Tech team leader said, “They were dressed in only t-shirts and shorts, and were wearing hydration bladders. They were happy to see us and even happier to be returned to Port Renfrew”. The crew landed on the shoreline, picked up their young passengers and transported them to Port Renfrew. The helicopter was able to land in the school soccer field and the young men were turned over to Ground Search and Rescue and the RCMP. The Cormorant crew: Aircraft Commander Capt Rob Mulholland, First Officer Capt Jerret Cormier, Flight Engineer Cpl Dominic Frenette, SAR Techs Sgt Dan Pasieka and MCpl Marc Trombley.
