MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.,
a provider of essential information solutions, announced today it
has been authorized to begin work on a number of projects totaling over $5.7
million (CAD) to add significant new capabilities to and refresh the solution
technology for a flight path safety system delivered by MDA to the United
States Air Force (USAF) in 2004. The Air Force Terminal Instrument Procedures
Replacement (AFTERPS-R) system is deployed to more than 190 end-users
throughout all USAF Major Commands.
Terminal Instrument Procedures are published instructions to pilots
specifying a series of aircraft maneuvers that must be executed for the
aircraft to transition safely from an en route airway to a runway, or vice
versa, when flying by instruments. The AFTERPS-R system ingests digital
terrain, obstruction and aeronautical data to build and display a virtual
model of the physical environment surrounding an airport that is then used to
develop a safe flight path corridor. The system does this by automatically
assessing the complex rules governing the design of procedures and flagging
deviations from the rules that result from the physical environment. The
deviations are noted by the designer, who can then quickly make modifications
to the procedures.
