Air Force Association of Canada salutes the best of the best

The Air Force Association of Canada (AFAC) held its annual general meeting and annual awards banquet on October 17 at the National Air Force Museum of Canada at 8 Wing Trenton.

Every year, AFAC gives trophies and awards in recognition of excellence in Canadian military and civilian aviation.

This year’s recipients are:

•Warrant Officer Claudette Saunders was named Air Person of the Year

•Master Warrant Officer Tom Fielding was named Air Reservist of the Year

•The Canadian Helicopter Force (Afghanistan) won the Air Marshal W.A. Bishop, VC Memorial Trophy for its contribution in Afghanistan

•413 Squadron, 424 Squadron, 439 Squadron and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at 8 Wing Trenton won the Andrew “Andy” Mynarski, VC Memorial Trophy for air search and rescue

•440 Transport Squadron, Yellowknife won the Gordon R. McGregor Trophy for outstanding achievement in air transportation during Operation NUNALIVUT 09

•The HMCS Ville de Quebec Helicopter Air Detachment won the RCAF Golden Hawks Trophy for achievement in military aviation during overseas operations, including escorting food cargo ships in Somalia with the United Nations World Food Program, which fed 181,500 people for one year

•The Hawk One team won the NORAD trophy for dedication and contribution of the NORAD team, for flying its refurbished F-86 Sabre Jet in celebration of Canada’s Centennial of Flight

•The members of the Baddeck, Nova Scotia Aerial Experimentation Association 2005 won the J.A.D. McCurdy award for constructing an airworthy replica of the Silver Dart for Canada’s Centennial of Flight

AFAC is a national not-for-profit aerospace organization that reminds Canadians of their country's rich aeronautical history, supports Canada's Air Force and encourages civil aviation in the country.

Congratulations to all of the winners and to all members of the Air Force and AFAC for their diligence and hard work.
