It's a story we've all been waiting to hear. The star witness and lone survivor of the crash of Cougar Flight 491 takes the stand today at the Wells Inquiry this morning. Attention will be riveted on Robert Decker today, the only one of 18 persons on board the Sikorsky helicopter to make it out alive. He was spotted afloat on the water and picked up by the Search and Rescue team from Cougar itself. Sixteen others went down with the helicopter while Allison Maher's body was plucked from the ocean around the same time that Decker was rescued. He spent some time in hospital with serious injuries before being released.
The inquiry has placed tight restrictions on the media for today's testimony, such as limiting access to Decker. Because many of the families of victims of the crash hope to attend today's hearing, the general public is being asked to view the proceedings via the webcast or on Rogers Cable because of space limitations. The families of the victims of the March 12th crash hope after today to have a better understanding of what happened on that fateful day. Decker was met by a throng of reporters who took his picture as he entered the Tara Building, where the Inquiry is taking place. Decker walked calmly into the building, head held high, accompanied by his lawyer. The hearing room is filled by families of the victims of the March 12 tragedy, all of them waiting for Decker to shed light on what would be the last moments of the fateful flight.
