19 WING COMOX – A Cormorant helicopter from 442 Squadron, at 19 Wing, participated in the response to a mayday made by a fishing vessel today near Port Hardy. The Cormorant was launched by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria at about 9:30 a.m. to support the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter (CCGC) Cape Sutil and CCGC Sooke Post.
The mayday was heard by the Marine Transmission and Traffic Service (MCTS) station in Comox. Immediately, CCGC Cape Sutil and Sook Post were tasked from their respective location to answer the call. The boaters made the international call for help when their 30-foot fishing vessel hit some rocks at Dillon Point, 5 km east of Port Hardy. CCGC Cape Sutil was first on scene, finding three of the occupants on rocks because the boat was aground. Two had fallen off the boat prior to the accident and had not been seen since. Upon the arrival of the Cormorant, the CCGC Cape Sutil had found one of the missing men, unfortunately he was deceased.
The Cormorant performed a shore search around the Point twice unsuccessfully. The crew then flew over the small islands nearby and the water separating them from the Point. The second man was found in the water, tragically he had also passed.
The three survivals were taken to Port Hardy with no life threatening injury to receive medical care by BC Ambulance. Their condition is unknown at the time.
