A 442 Squadron Cormorant and crew were launched Thursday, in the early morning for an air medical evacuation (medevac) of a 62-year-old male who was suffering from internal bleeding on the cruise ship Regal Princess.
The Cormorant crew members: Aircraft Commander Capt Jamie Davidson, First Officer Capt Kevin Toone, Flight Engineer Sgt. Brian Medland, and SAR Techs Sgt John Elmes and Sgt Andre Daigle were slightly delayed in getting airborne. They had to remove some gear to allow for the weight of the extra fuel necessary for the long trip. When the call came in the cruise ship was 200 nautical miles out to sea. Capt Toone said, “the cruise ship crew was extremely co-operative and helpful by turning the cruise ship toward shore to lessen the distance the Cormorant had to travel over water.”
There was no place to land on the ship so the SAR techs had to hoist the patient up to the helicopter. The patient remained stable throughout the transfer to the helicopter and during the flight. The medevac team, Lt(N) Elmer Roque, flight surgeon and Cpl Kelly Harding, medical assistant and the SAR Techs were all involved in administering the emergency medical protocols on the 170 nautical mile flight from the hoisting area to the Victoria General Hospital.
