Today in History - March 21, 1958

Canada's era of supersonic flight began on March 21, 1958, when pilot Jan Zurakowski took off from Malton Airport near Toronto in an Avro CF-105 Arrow for a 35-minute maiden flight. Less than a month later, Zurakowski flew the Arrow at Mach 1.5 at an altitude of 50,000 feet. In spite of the aircraft's early promise, the Canadian government scrapped the project before the Arrow could be put into production.

Québec's first bachelor's degree program in aerospace engineering announced

MONTREAL - École Polytechnique de Montréal today officially inaugurated Québec's first bachelor's degree program in aerospace engineering, at a ceremony attended by Michelle Courchesne, the Minister of Education, Leisure and Sport, Lyne Lavoie, Executive Director of the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation, and Maud Cohen, President of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, as well as representatives of the aerospace industry and the first group of students enrolled in the program.

NAV CANADA reports February traffic figures

CANADIAN RUNWAYS REMAIN TOO SHORT

The Transportation Safety Board has warned this week that runways in most major airports in Canada are still too short.

Investigations after the 2005 Air France crash in Toronto led to the TSB making the recommendation that there be an added 300m safety area or an equivalent “arrestor bed” – crushable concrete that can stop an aircraft – where there is not enough space at the end of major runways.

Porter Airlines takes leading position with Toronto-Ottawa, Toronto-Montreal routes

Porter Airlines is significantly expanding its service on the key Toronto-Montreal and Toronto-Ottawa Eastern Triangle routes, offering up to 84 combined daily flights.

Flights between Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and Montreal Trudeau Airport will grow to 46 daily trips from the current peak of 28. On the Toronto City Airport-Ottawa route, flight frequency increases to 38 daily trips from 34. The majority of flights will operate every 40 minutes on the Montreal route and every hour on the Ottawa route. These changes take full effect May 5.

Toronto Pearson welcomes Virgin America

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is delighted to welcome Virgin America to Toronto Pearson. The airline announced today that they will be introducing direct daily service to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Toronto beginning this June. Their new services will offer passengers additional options when flying to the United States, with the potential to attract new visitors to Toronto.

NAV CANADA and Sensis Corporation win 2010 Environment Award

NAV CANADA's deployment of Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) technology over Hudson Bay was named winner of the Environment Award at the 2010 ATC Global Exhibition and Conference held last week in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The technology, consisting of five ground installations around the Hudson Bay shoreline, was developed and supplied by Sensis.

Bombardier Inc. today announced the commencement of a cash tender offer to purchase up to US$550.0 million aggregate principal amount (the “Tender Cap”) of Bombardier’s 6.75% Notes due 2012 (CUSIP/ISIN Nos. 097751AG6 / USC10602AG20) (the “6.75% Notes”), 6.30% Notes due 2014 (CUSIP/ISIN Nos. 097751AH4 / USC10602AH03) (the “6.30% Notes” and, collectively with the 6.75% Notes, the “U.S. Dollar Notes”) and Floating Rate Senior Notes due 2013 (Common Code/ISIN No. 027397891 / XS0273978592) (the “Floating Rate Notes” and, collectively with the U.S. Dollar Notes, the “Notes”). The tender offer is being made pursuant to an Offer to Purchase dated March 15, 2010 and, in respect of 6.75% Notes and 6.30% Notes only, the related Letter of Transmittal.
