Once again weather has played havoc with The Spirit of Edmonton project. The open-cockpit bi-plane is being put to rest in Penhold, Alberta after a brutal flight from Brooks over the past few hours. The flight was created to honor the veterans who were a major part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the war.
Curtis Peters, pilot and President of Aviation.ca, said “This was probably the worst flight we have done… we got bumped around pretty bad… the weather system is moving in ….. fast….It’s like being in a paper bag in the middle of a windstorm….”
The plan now is to find a hanger for the Kelly-D, and then evaluate what the next step will be.
“The system is moving in from the north, the south and the west… we’re not sure what the plan will be,” he told us in a telephone interview. “But we’re on the ground and we’re safe”.
So, our sun-burned, wind-burned, aching pilots will rest while they once again admire and contemplate the heroic efforts of those who have gone before …… all in the name of Aviation.

Flying Colours Corp., an independently owned completion & modification center, recently completed work on the installation of a “Stone Floor” in a Bombardier Global 5000 business Jet. The new aircraft was flown from the Bombardier Global Completion Center in Montreal to Flying Colours for the modification and then overseas to the end user. The List Components & Furniture GmbH manufactured Stone Floor was installed in the entry/galley area, forward lavatory, and aft lavatory area of the Global 5000 business jet owned by an international client. This new and cutting edge process see the granite get cut into 2.5mm slices and attached to a lightweight backplate, which gives it high elasticity without losing the necessary floor-loading requirements. The floor is custom engineered to fit a specific area and sealed to prevent liquids from penetrating the stone. The installation was carried out at Flying Colours Peterborough, Ontario facility. Flying Colours has seen an escalation in the demand for its refurbishment services among Global Express owners and sees this market as having major growth potential.

The last time we saw our intrepid pilots they were cold.......no make that frost bitten and exhausted, but happy to have completed their tour in the Spirit of Edmonton bi-plane, for many this would have been the end of the story.
But no, for Curtis Peters and Tom Hinderks this little discomfort was nothing and has spurred them on to their next adventure.
Leaving tomorrow, our pilots are following a shortened version of the BCATP tour.

Mirabel, Quebec -
In recent years, the Harper Government has made major investments in the country’s military capabilities in support of the Canada First Defence Strategy. The Strategy sets out a detailed road map for the modernization of the Canadian Forces. It will increase the size of the Forces and replace core capabilities through stable and predictable defence funding, including balanced investments across the four pillars upon which military capabilities are built: personnel, equipment, readiness and infrastructure. The Strategy will ensure a first-class, modern military, one that is well-trained, well-equipped and ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century. It also presents unprecedented opportunities for Canadian industry in its reach for global excellence.
