RCAF commander takes a swing for charity

Lieutenant-General André Deschamps, commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force kicked off the first-ever Patriot Golf Day Canada, at the North Bay Golf and Country Club in late August. LGen Deschamps was joined by the commander of 22 Wing North Bay, Ont., and members of the Professional Golf Association of Canada (PGA), for a round of golf.

Defence Minister Peter McKay has announced the senior appointments for the Royal Canadian Air Force, including the selection of Major-General (soon to be promoted to lieutenant-general) Yvan Blondin as the new commander of the RCAF. He will assume command of the RCAF, succeeding LGen André Deschamps who will retire, at a change of command ceremony later this fall.

In late August, HMCS Charlottetown wraps up a seven-month deployment and bids farewell to the ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detachment that shared the flight deck with Osprey, the Halifax-class frigate’s CH-124 Sea King helicopter. Charlottetown is the first Canadian warship to carry a UAV detachment throughout an expeditionary deployment.

Exercise Rim of the Pacific 2012 (Ex RIMPAC) launched one of the biggest maritime exercises this June in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii.

Operating out of the historic Hickam Air Force Base—where the attack on Pearl Harbor made history more than 60 years ago—the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) demonstrated its interoperability capability with the 22 allied nations participating in the exercise by providing air-to-air refuelling (AAR) support.
